History tibia
The idea of writing one-line role-playing game came in autumn 1995, when we realized the great potential of the Internet. Unlike text-based multi-user dungeons at that time, our game should have a graphical-user interface, giving the player a good impression on the world he lives in.
In the Easter holidays in 1996, the project has begun with concrete plannings. We have developed Basic routines for handling objects and implement an editor (MudEdit) for creating mapping and facilities. Moreover, we experimented with TCP sockets and / IP protocol in order to create a communication between two hosts. By August, we had a program running on the Linux server and a client program running Windows ready and can make our first steps with an avatar on a map created by MudEdit.
During autumn, functionality of the tibia increased rapidly. Avatars got individual names and clothes. They can take, drop, and move objects, and talking to each other. In the Christmas holidays, in turn, using the facility, including implementing the user management data storage account, and created version The first of our homepage. We were ready to go online! tibia birthday was Jan. 7, 1997, when we launch a permanent server rrws27.uni-regensburg.de University of Regensburg.
Only a few users in the tibia was because they were only advertising some entries in search engines. Our first guest was Alben January 10, welcomed with enthusiasm by the three gods. In addition, continued development. First non-player characters (Sam) and monsters (trolls, spiders, cyclopses) entered tibia. Of course, it was possible to fight against monsters. Moreover, the third dimension was introduced, at least graphically, and there were letters to write messages permanently. Plenty of things for an update to version 2.0 Alpha in June 3, 1997.
In the summer holidays Tibia made great strides: effects of temporary cumulable objects, liquids, a new combat system, automap, movement in all three dimensions, different times of day and light resources, and a full measure / use the system. In addition, the small map (160 x 160 fields) was replaced by a larger (512 x 512 fields) that contains the first Thais buildings (the Temple, Frodo's tavern, store Gorna equipment, fittings Sam, Castle) and some dungeons inhabited by new monster races. This was worth another update: to version Alpha 3.0 on October 28, 1997.
More and more players discover the tibia, mainly from Germany, but also some from around the world. Some have been so fascinated that they tibia-established their homepages. The first was Yorin's Homepage tibia, published on January 28, 1998. While we have developed a system for magic, presented skills and professions, and applied Tibian Royal Mail and the depot system. In addition, we changed our site by giving it an outfit modern. Tibia seems to have increased. Therefore we decided to start the Beta phase on May 20, 1998.
This update was a huge success. People stay longer in the tibia, so that someone online was not ready at all times. Because the server got very little activity so much, we bought our own server (tibia.uni-passau.de) and placed it in his University of Passau on July 2, 1998.
Unfortunately, due to the rapid growth of the source code was made more obscure and unmaintainable. It was nearly impossible to add new features without adding new bugs. Therefore we decided to swallow the bitter pill of completely rewriting the server! It took us almost a year to accomplish this task. On June 18, 1999, we finally succeeded in starting phase Beta 5.0 with new server, more stable and open for further ideas.
After that, a lot of improvements took place, many to mention them here. Very Users helped us to map areas projecting even bigger (1024 x 1024 areas), attracting new facilities, writing stories, or taking care of the game as a game master. The average number of players online has increased from around 50 in the summer of 1999 to around 150 in summer 2000, thus making larger tibia-online role-playing game in Germany.
