So this is not a surprise when we see the rising popularity of home entertainment. With DVR, On-Demand and pay-per-View now easier than ever to enjoy a nice night at home. You would think that video rental stores like Blockbuster will bloom in this bad economy. Unfortunately this is not the case.
Netflix began in 1999 when he changed the way people rent and watched movies. For a fixed monthly fee you will have access to the Netflix web site where you can pick the movies to be mailed to your home pre-paid envelope. Eliminate any need or reason to make a trip to your local video store. Due to this new hassle free and inexpensive method Blockbuster Movie Rental was feeling the heat.
When you go to a video store and rent a film, if you did not return it in time you will be charged a late fee. With Netflix pricing strategy and without restriction on how long time you can keep a rental, it provided customers with another reason to not use Blockbuster.
Blockbuster was not going down with a war, however. Blockbuster adopted a "no late fee policy in retail shops there. Well ... type. If you keep rent a DVD with more than 5-days from its due date, Blockbuster will automatically deduct the cost of retail DVD directly from your bank account. At this time it was clear that was not enough to compete with fast growing Netflix. So Blockbuster then decided to take them head.
In August 2004 Blockbuster launched a similar online DVD rental service. It worked the same way as Netflix received, but Blockbuster retail stores that it gave them an advantage of Netflix. Instead of mailing DVDs back and waiting a day or two for a new, Blockbuster gave you the option of returning to their retail store to film a new DVD right then and there without Free. Using the advantage of their stores retail, Blockbuster has made their presence known as one of the top two Online DVD rental services in the country.
Netflix had a response. In 2007, Netflix offered their customers the opportunity to watch movies directly on their computer. They already use their computers for what they wanted pickout DVD be mailed to homes them, so it makes sense to offer select titles to view free on your computer without having to wait for the DVD by mail. Netflx gave another blow to Blockbuster early this year when they signed a deal with video game giant Microsoft. Allowing any XBOX XBOX 360 owners to sync their account of living with their Netflix account. Now you can make any movie from your Netflix queue directly XBOX 360 to your first in your TV.
With Netflix offering thousands of titles in the fingertips of consumers to their daily it has become almost impossible for Blockbuster to compete. Not to mention the new RedBox kiosks that seem to be popping up everywhere. RedBox are small kiosks that are placed in local supermarkets and pharmacies (usually in the form a blockbuster), which provides just DVD's come out for a dollar a night. Blockbuster new releases $ 4.99 for two-nights.
Due to the overwhelming pressure of Netflix, and RedBox, Blockbuster was forced to close 960 of their 3,700 stores to retail this year. Nobody knows how much longer can hold off Blockbuster. I imagine that there could be much longer.
